Novak Djokovic is having a sensational run at the US Open 2025. The 38-year-old has created multiple tournament in the tournament. On Sunday, he defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in the last 16 to cruise into the quarter-finals. With this, the Serb became the oldest man to reach the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slams in a single season.
Djokovic dominated from the opening game, breaking the 35-year-old German’s serve six times during the 109-minute match.
“I don’t know how many more I’m going to have, so obviously each one is very special and I want to thank all you guys for being present here tonight,” Djokovic said after the victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The four-times Flushing Meadows champion was near untouchable on serve, firing 12 aces while winning 79% of first-serve points.
“It definitely helps if you serve well. I think I had a great serving performance in the last round and also tonight,” said Djokovic.
“I just saw the stats, I out-served one of the guys that had the most aces during the tournament this year, so that’s a great stat. Obviously, that helps make my life easier on the court.”
Breaking Roger Federer’s record
With Sunday’s win, Djokovic also broke Federer’s record by reaching the quarter-final of all four majors in a year on nine occasions in the Open Era. The Swiss legend had managed the same on eight occasions.
The victory also moves Djokovic into his 64th Grand Slam quarter-final, extending his all-time record.
Novak Djokovic to play Taylor Fritz next
The road to the US Open 2025 finals will get tougher for Novak Djokovic. The veteran is all set to take on world number four Taylor Fritz in the quarter-final of the tournament.
Fritz is the lone American left in the men’s draw, who overcame Czech Republic’s 21st seed Tomas Machac 6-4 6-3 6-3.
Djokovic has a 10-0 head-to-head record against Fritz, who is chasing to become the first American to win a grand slam trophy in men’s singles since Andy Roddick in 2003.
The winner is likely to face second seed Carlos Alacaraz in the semi-finals.
Djokovic’s Fitness
Djokovic’s fitness became a concern as he required treatment from the physio on his right shoulder and forearm during changeovers in Sunday’s match, although he did not look too troubled and won 79 per cent of his first-serve points.
The world No.7 opened up after his third-round win over Cam Norrie about coming to terms with his ailing body.
“In terms of how I’m feeling, it really goes up and down, to be honest. Yeah, it’s frustrating for me, honestly, that I’m not able to feel 100 per cent always like I have for 20-plus years,” he said.
“I don’t think there is much more that I could do than what I’m doing now, to be honest.
“If the body doesn’t listen to me when I go deep in the grand slam tournaments, as it was kind of the case last few slams, then that’s a hard one to swallow for me, because I know the amount of hours I’m putting in daily to care for my body.”
