ODI World Cup 2023: India restricts Pakistan to 191 runs

4 Min Read

India and Pakistan clashed with each other at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the ongoing ODI World Cup. Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to put Pakistan into bat. Pakistan scored 191 runs in the first innings. Here is a recap of the first innings.

Pakistan has a steady start

Despite having a shaky top order in recent times, Pakistan started with a positive approach. Jasprit Bumrah only conceded four runs in the first over as Abdullah Shafique smashed a boundary on the last ball of the over. Mohammed Siraj started poorly with some overpitched deliveries and paid the price as Imam-ul-Haq smashed him for the boundaries. Bumrah from the other end bowled another quiet over leading to just one run. Pakistan scored 37 runs in the first seven overs and looked to be in sublime control for the World Cup. Siraj trapped Shafique before the wicket on the last ball of the eighth over as India picked the first wicket of the match. Shafique scored 20 runs in 24 balls hitting three fours. Hardik Pandya replaced Bumrah from the other end and leaked 18 runs in his first two overs. Pakistan finished with 49 runs in the first 10 overs and lost just one wicket.

India controls middle overs

Pandya induced the outside edge from Imam’s bat as the Pakistani opener played a back-foot drive and KL Rahul dove and took a low catch to dismiss the left-handed batter. In the following over, Mohammad Rizwan was given out LBW but a review saved him as the ball was missing the stumps. At the end of 20 overs, Pakistan had scored 103 runs for the loss of two wickets. In the 25th over, Babar survived a close LBW call. India went for the review but it was umpire’s call on wicket hitting as Babar survived and India retained the review. Babar brought up his half-century in 57 balls in the 29th over and looked in fine touch set for a big score. Siraj in the following over dismissed the half-centurion and provided a much-needed breakthrough for India. Siraj broke the 82-run partnership between Pakistan’s best batters. At the end of 30 overs, Pakistan had scored 156 runs for the loss of three wickets.

Kuldeep Yadav in his eighth over took two wickets and put the Pakistani innings on the backfoot. Kuldeep dismissed Saud Shakeel after a successful review for LBW from Rohit overturned on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus’ call. In the same over, Iftikhar Ahmed turned a tame leg-side delivery into a wicket-taking delivery as the ball hit his gloves and went to hit the stumps.

Bumrah was brought back into the attack and the star Indian pacer dismissed the set batter, Rizwan. Rizwan scored 49 runs in 69 balls hitting seven fours. Bumrah in his next over dismissed Shadab Khan and completely brought the match in India’s grasp.
