Champions Trophy 2025 PAK vs BAN: Match Abandoned Due To Rain (Credits- ESPN)
PAK vs BAN: A much-anticipated match between Pakistan and Bangladesh in the ongoing Champions Trophy was abandoned without being able to bowl a ball after rain-ridden Rawalpindi forced the cancellation. This was the second washout in the tournament after the Australia-South Africa match on Tuesday.
Rain continued to fall heavily throughout the day, making it impossible for the ground staff to remove the covers or ensure any play whatsoever occurred.
It was approximately an hour and a half after the scheduled start that the officials decided at 3:27 pm local time to abandon the match. It would turn out that this was the last match to be played at the Rawalpindi stadium, since it had already seen two high-profile events: washout of the Pakistan-Bangladesh game, and New Zealand’s five-wicket victory over Bangladesh on February 24.
Since both teams were awarded a point apiece for the match not taking place, the effect on the Group A standings was not much but was there. Bangladesh finished ahead of Pakistan in the last standing net run rate of -0.443 to -1.087, thus impacting the standing of these two teams.
Though both teams ended the tournament on an equal footing, it was the net run rate that allowed Bangladesh to overtake Pakistan as they had a slightly better record than Pakistan.
The two teams were disappointed in that they could have progressed to the latter stages of the tournament had the match gone on, but the rain came down heavily on them and, as they realize now, the points they received were insufficient to propel anyone into the semi-finals, since both were already out of the hunt.
Settled on one side, Pakistan has its eyes on visiting New Zealand to play a white-ball event in the month this March. This trip shall consist of five T20Is and three ODIs. It will be a golden opportunity for preparing the Pakistanis for even greater international assignments ahead.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, is setting its gaze toward Zimbabwe at home. They are hosts to Zimbabwe in three ODIs and three T20Is, which shan’t be another crucial series for the Bangladeshi-side skill enhancement in the arena of international cricket.
As the rain-drenched tournament is slowly going down to its end, Group A still has one last match to go. India will take on New Zealand on March 2 in Dubai. This clash is of utmost importance in deciding the number one slot of the group as both teams are already in the semi-finals. The result of this encounter will decide who will top the table, hence gaining the much-needed advantage of a favorable semi-final draw.
Both India and New Zealand have given excellent performances right through this tournament, and the fans are keenly awaiting this final contest of Group A where the stage is set for one final ka-boom.
The Pakistan-Bangladesh match in the now-abandoned Champions Trophy played in Rawalpindi ended up being drawn and both teams scraped through with a dent in their hopes for progression. Both teams were already out of the semi-final race, but nonetheless, Bangladesh finished above Pakistan on the net run rate.
While Pakistan will start preparing for their New Zealand tour, Bangladesh will optimize their chances against Zimbabwe. The final match of Group A between India and New Zealand will determine the Group A leader before the semi-finals.
