The Pakistan men’s hockey team received an invitation to compete in the FIH Pro League 2025-26 after New Zealand, decided to withdraw from the upcoming season.
The Kiwis had earned qualification by winning the 2024-25 Nations Cup.
Hockey’s world governing body, the International Hockey Federation (FIH), formally extended the invite to Pakistan on Wednesday.
Pakistan has the chance to make history debut in the FIH Pro League by accepting the invitation.
What’s at stake and what happens if Pakistan turns down the offer?
The stakes are high as the tournament will also serve as a qualifying event for the LA 2028 Olympics.
If Pakistan accepts the invitation, they are guaranteed to play two matches against arch-rivals India as per the tournament format.
The Pakistan Hockey Association has till August 12 to inform FIH of their decision to accept or deny the invitation.
Officials say Pakistan’s entry into the league hinges on government support, as playing home and away matches against top teams would require a hefty budget – around 81m USD.
Without a nod from the authorities, Pakistan might miss the golden opportunity. If Pakistan turns down the offer, France will take the vacant spot in the league.
“This is a big chance for Pakistan hockey to get back in the game at the international level,” a source said. “But we can’t take the plunge without solid financial backing.”

The FIH Pro League is the top-tier annual competition on the international hockey calendar. Launched in 2019, the tournament features nine of the best national teams in the world across both men’s and women’s categories.
Each team plays 16 matches. The team with the highest points at the end is crowned champion, while the bottom-placed side is relegated to the second-tier Nations Cup. Meanwhile, the Nations Cup winner earns promotion to the Pro League.
