Pat Cummins took six wickets against South Africa and ended with the figures of 6/28 on the second day. Because of this, Australia got a 74-run lead in the first innings after South Africa got all out for 138 runs in 57.1 overs. He took the wickets of Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, and Kagiso Rabada. This bowling performance was not only important for the match but also set new records.

Breaking Bob Willis’ record

Cummins’ bowling figures of 6/28 became the best by any captain in a Test match at Lord’s. He broke Bob Willis’ record of 6/101 which he made against India in 1982. The Australian fast bowler took important wickets and troubled the South African batters with his accurate bowling and pressure after lunch.

Reached 300 Test wickets

This final was also special for Cummins because he became the eighth Australian player to reach 300 wickets in Test matches. He needed six wickets to reach this number, and he did it by taking South Africa’s last few wickets. He got Rabada out to complete the 300 wickets. Cummins joined a group of top Australian bowlers like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Nathan Lyon, and Mitchell Starc.

Cummins’ great bowling in the WTC final took his total to 78 wickets in the WTC 2023–25 cycle. Because of this, he became the bowler with the most wickets, going past Jasprit Bumrah from India who had 77 wickets. On day two alone, he took four wickets and showed how he leads Australia’s bowling attack with good performance.

Most wickets in ICC finals

Cummins also made another record by becoming the bowler with the most wickets in ICC tournament finals in all formats. With six wickets in the WTC final, he went ahead of Mitchell Starc’s 11 wickets. He always performs well in big matches and is a big reason behind Australia’s success.

Equalled Richie Benaud’s record

The 32-year-old captain also matched Richie Benaud’s record of nine five-wicket hauls by a captain in Test matches. He is now second after Pakistan’s Imran Khan who had 12 such performances.

Cummins’ performance at Lord’s and all the records he broke have helped Australia start their title defence strongly in the WTC final.
