Pataudi Trophy Officially Rebranded As Anderson-Tendulkar

2 Min Read

In a historic decision taken by the ECB and the BCCI, the Pataudi Trophy has been officially rebranded as the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy. The announcement came ahead of the five-match series that begins on 20 June 2025 at Headingley, Leeds.

Pataudi Trophy To Be Renamed

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to retire the Pataudi Trophy and introduce the new Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The move aims to honour the two legends, England’s James Anderson and India’s Sachin Tendulkar.

Why Was The Launch Delayed?

The official launch of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy was delayed due to the tragic airline disaster in Ahmedabad, which claimed 275 lives, including over 50 British nationals. The event was originally scheduled for 14 June 2025, but it was postponed out of respect for the families and victims.

Pataudi Legacy Continues

The decision sparked debates and mixed reactions from fans and experts alike, with many of them questioning the need to move away from the Pataudi legacy. In response to the widespread public sentiment and direct intervention from Sachin Tendulkar, who personally reached out to the BCCI and ECB, a compromise was decided.

While the series trophy will now be called the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a special medal honouring the last Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi will be introduced. This honour will be awarded to the winning captain, ensuring the Pataudi legacy continues.

While the decision was met with initial doubt and resistance, the Pataudi medal made it easier for everyone to accept. The move not only honours the two living legends of the game but also ensures that the legacy of the Pataudi family continues to be celebrated in future.
