Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades: Renegades Struggle Early After Being Put In
Melbourne Renegades were a bit jittery while batting first. Both openers fell cheaply, and captain Sophie Molineux fell for just five runs to reduce them to 34/3 inside the first five overs.
Their troubles deepened as Lily Mills bowled Alice Capsey upon reaching the 50-run mark. Georgia Wareham offered some short-lived resistance with a quick-fire 21, but it was Nicole Faltum’s 41* and Sarah Coyte’s 24 that salvaged the innings.
The two combined 46 runs in just six overs and nudged the Renegades towards a competitive total. However, two late run-outs halted their progress, and the Renegades were dismissed for exactly 150.
Devine and Mooney Provide Scorchers a Flying Start
Chasing 151, Beth Mooney and Sophie Devine provided the perfect start for the Scorchers. Devine was in destructive form from the outset striking a four and a six off Bekker in the opening over, before smashing Issy Wong for three boundaries in the next.
Even Sophie Molineux wasn’t spared, with 15 runs conceded to a surging Devine. Coyte eventually removed Devine, but Mooney kept the chase alive by putting pressure back on Wong with successive boundaries.
Capsey’s Triple Strike Adds Late Drama
Just when the run chase seemed a straightforward affair, Alice Capsey turned the contest on its head with a brilliant 14th over. First, Mooney was stumped. Paige Schofield was caught and bowled two balls later. Chloe Ainsworth fell soon after, giving Capsey impressive figures of 4 for 14. These breakthroughs kept the Scorchers to a tight position, with 32 runs off the final 36 balls.
Youngsters Mills and Kemp Seal the Win
The young talents of Freya Kemp and Lily Mills, however, remained mature and cool-headed amidst the pressure. They steadied the innings and led the Scorchers home, with eight balls to spare, in a vital win that was fired early by Sophie Devine’s brilliance.
