Phoenix Suns Team Profile and Analysis: Western Conference of Pacific Division NBA

Western Conference is one of the two conferences of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the other being the Eastern Conference. Northwest Division, Southwest Division and Pacific Division are the divisions of Western Conference. The conferences are further divided into teams, each conference comprising 15 teams each. Phoenix Suns is one of the teams in the Pacific division of Western Conference. It is one of the four teams (other teams – the Coyotes, Cardinals and Diamondbacks) of NBA to be based in the Phoenix area but only team to be named as representing the city. 

Phoenix Suns is an American basketball team which plays as  Pacific Division of Western Conference of National Basketball Association. It is the only Pacific division team which is not based in California. It is based in Phoenix, Arizona and currently play its home games at Footprint Center since 1992.  From 1968 to 1992, the team’s arena was the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The said team started playing in 1968 as an expansion team. The team gave mediocre performance in its early years but in 1976, it reached NBA finals after partnering with Dick Van Arsdale and Alvan Adams with Paul Westphal but failed to win championship. NBA All-star Walter Davis and joining of Kevin Johnson, three-time NBA All-Star and four-time second team All-NBA selection became part of the team in 1988 which help built the team rebuilt in 1980’s. Charles Barkley, who has played 16 times for NBA along with Tom Chambers and Dan Majerle aka Thunder Dan were part of the team during 1990’s. The team accomplished the playoffs for thirteen consecutive times for a franchise-record. It was during this period of 1990’s that team stayed a regular title

In 2004, Canadian professional basketball player Steve Nash became part of Suns. The said player along with then head coach Mike D’Antoni and other players- Amar’e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion, the team won a franchise record in 2004–05 season. Suns weren’t again able to win an NBA championship and thus leading into rebuild. Also, with team members, Chris Paul, Devin Booker, Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton, Suns again reached NBA finals in 2021. 

Players Barkley and Nash have won the NBA Most Valuable player honor while playing for Suns.The team has the league’s one of the best all-time winning percentage and 2nd  highest winning percentage of any team to not have won the championship.
