These are the commonly used Pickleball terms that you need to know if you are new to Pickleball.

DINK

It is a soft shot that is controlled, and it just clears the net and lands in the kitchen or the non-volley zone. The purpose of a dink is to force a mistake on the part of your opponent.

Ace

Ace is the shot that is so powerful that the opponent is unable to touch it, and it helps earn a point immediately for the server.

Backhand

Backhand is the shot that is made in such a manner that the paddle has to be swung across the server’s body with the back of their hand, facing the stroke’s direction.

Double bounce

This requires that both the team, let the ball bounce on their side once after a serve, before they can start to volley it in the air.

Baseline

Hitting the ball used to play Pickleball in such a manner that it does not bounce away from the paddle and instead is carried along on the pickleball paddle during the forward motion.

Drop Shot

A drop shot goes just over the net is a soft shot. It lands in the non-volley zone or kitchen of the opponent. It is like a dink shot, but it is generally used from further back in the court.

Centerline

The line that divides the service courts into the two sides, right and left, and extends from the kitchen to the baseline is called the center line.

It is a high-arching shot, which goes over the head of the opponent when they are too close to the net.

Approach Shot

Around the post or ATP shot is an advanced shot. In this shot, the ball is hit around the net post, and it lands in bounds.

Backspin

This spin leads the ball to rotate backward, slowing it down, and might even lead the ball to bounce in an unpredictable manner after it bounces.

Backswing

It is the motion done with the paddle that generates power before hitting the ball.

Ground Stroke

It is generally played from the baseline and is a shot that is made once the ball bounces.

Champion Shot

An exceptional or winning shot is referred to as the Champion shot.

Double Hit

When the ball gets in contact with the paddle twice during one continuous stroke.

Forehand

The shot where the palm of your hand is facing the direction of the shot is called a froehand shot.

Kitchen/Non Volley Zone

It is the 7-foot area, which is situated on both sides of the net, where volleying is not allowed.

The players are not allowed to hit the ball out of the air before the ball bounces back.

Side Out

Side out is the term used when one side loses its service and the service is awarded to the other side.

Service Court

Other than the non-volley line, all the lines are included in the service court. This means the baseline, the sideline, and the area on either side of the center line bounded by the non-volley line.
