PL: Newcastle United secures Champions League spot

4 Min Read

Newcastle United capped off their historic Premier League season by securing a spot for Champions League football next season. The Magpies will be seen in the marquee European competition after a long gap of 20 years. After a goalless draw against Leicester City in 37th Matchday, Newcastle secured a top-4 finish.

The Magpies have 70 points in 37 games. Manchester United are placed 3rd on the Premier League table with 69 points in 36. Manchester United just need a win or a draw in their last two games to secure Champions League football for next season. Liverpool are placed 5th on the points table with 66 points in 37 games. Liverpool would hope that Manchester United somehow slips up and fails to collect any points till the last matchday. Liverpool can reach 69 points with a win in their last match and if Manchester United fails to collect any points then they will be bumped down to the 5th spot as Liverpool has a goal difference of 28 as compared to Manchester United’s 11.

With 19 victories, 13 draws, and only five losses so far this season in the English Premier League, the Magpies are having a fantastic campaign. Newcastle has suffered fewer losses than any other team in 2022–23, except for the league leaders and the defending champions Manchester City. Upon Eddie Howe’s appointment as manager in November 2021, Newcastle finished the previous campaign in 11th place. The Englishman took Newcastle from 19th to 11th, and now, for the first time since 2003, St. James’ Park will get the Champions League football.

Newcastle United vs Leicester City

Newcastle had a strong early advantage against the Foxes but failed to score despite having 23 shots on goal. They also kept 78% of the ball, yet Leicester City nevertheless managed to earn an important point as they battle relegation this year. In the 93rd minute, Timothy Castagne’s volley was stopped by Nick Pope as Leicester nearly pulled off a victory.

Leicester City who are in a relegation battle this season would have liked to take away three points but would be happy with the solitary they secured thanks to a draw against Newcastle. Leicester is currently two points behind Everton. Everton faces Bournemouth on the last matchday. If Everton manages to secure the three points then they will be safe but if they get a draw or a loss then they would rely heavily on the result of Leicester City vs West Ham United. Leicester has a much better goal difference in comparison to Everton so they would have to make sure they get more points than Leicester City.
