Players With Most WTA 1000 Titles

While Grand Slams remain the most coveted titles in the sport of tennis, there are also many other tournaments that play crucial roles determining the rankings of players. 

The WTA 1000 titles are among those important events that harness the potential of players in women’s tennis and lift up their standings on points table. Let us have a look at players with most number of WTA 1000 titles.

1. Serena Williams (13) 

Tennis legend Serena Williams won 73 WTA titles and out of them 13 are WTA 1000 titles. Her record for the most WTA 1000 titles still stands eight years after she won her last title in this format in Rome in 2016. The American reached 18 out of 49 of the WTA 1000 finals relative to her main draw appearances.

In a career spanning 18 years, Williams won a record 23 Grand Slam singles titles in the Open Era record. She was only 17 when she won the US Open in 1999.

2. Victoria Azarenka (10) 

Among the active players, Victoria Azarenka has the most WTA 1000 titles. The Belarusian has earned 10 WTA 1000 trophies since making her main draw debut in 2005. Six of those titles came in singles, while the rest were won in doubles.  Azarenka achieved a personal feat at the recently concluded Madrid Open when clinched her 200th WTA 1000 level victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tatjana Maria in the second round.

3. Iga Swiatek (10)

Iga Swiatek won her first Madrid Open WTA 1000 trophy, also her ninth in the format, beating two-time champion Aryna Sabalenka.  She won three WTA 1000 titles at Doha (2022-2024), followed by two at Rome (2021, 2022). 

The Pole made it to 11 finals in 29 main draw appearances, just ahead of Williams.  During her Madrid campaign, Swiatek also equaled Williams and Maria Sharapova (29) for taking the fewest possible matches to earn herself 25 WTA 1000 wins on clay.

4. Petra Kvitova (9) 

Petra Kvitova has nine WTA 1000 titles, with three of them coming in Madrid — the most by any player.. Kvitova’s three titles in Madrid came in 2011, 2015, and 2018. She has 180 wins in the WTA 1000 format in total. Her ninth WTA 1000 trophy came at Miami last season, However, she exited the next event in the format, the Madrid Open, in the second round.

5. Simona Halep (9) 

Romania’s Simona Halep boasts of nine WTA 1000 trophies. She was at the peak of her tennis career between 2014 and 2020, winning two Grand Slams and eight of her nine WTA 1000 titles during that period.  Halep’s ninth and last 1000 title was the National Bank Open in 2022 before she was accused in a doping controversy. After being cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in March this year, she was given a wildcard for the Madrid Open 2024.  However, the former World No. 1 did not take part in the competition citing health reasons.
