The second leg of the Triple Crown, the race, is in its 150th year. It follows the Kentucky Derby and precedes the Belmont Stakes, to be held this year at the Saratoga Race Course in New York.
Held each year on the third Saturday in May, the horse racing event brings together fans and bettors alike. This year, the race falls on May 17. The race is named after a horse that won a race at Pimlico on the day it opened in 1870.

Seize the Grey emerged as the winner in 2024.
However, there will be no Triple Crown champion this year as Sovereignty, the winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby, won’t be running in this race.
A total of 13 horses have won the Triple Crown, the most recent of which was Justified, which won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in 2018.

Preakness Stakes 2025: Prize Money
The the race carries a total prize purse of $2 million, same as that of the previous edition. Out of this amount, $1.2 million will be awarded to the owner. Out of this amount, $1.2 million will be awarded to the owner.
Along with the attractive sum, the winner will also receive a replica of the Woodlawn Vase, which is regarded as the most valuable trophy in American sports. The replica comes with a price tag of $30,000 and will be given to the owner’s team, who will emerge victorious in the 150th race.
To put it into context, , the 2025 Kentucky Derby had a total purse of $5 million, with roughly $3.1 million reportedly going to the winner.
