PSG are heading back to the Champions League final, and in the process, they’ve achieved something no defending European champion had managed in nearly a decade.

After knocking out Bayern Munich in the semifinals, PSG became the first reigning Champions League winners to return to the final since Real Madrid CF did it in 2018 during their famous era of dominance in Europe. That alone shows how difficult defending the trophy really is.

Over the years, several top clubs have won the Champions League only to struggle badly the following season. The pressure, expectations, and physical demands of another deep European run often become too much, even for elite squads. Since Real Madrid completed their run of three straight titles in 2018, every defending champion had failed to make it back to the final.

PSG have now ended that streak. The French side came through a dramatic semifinal tie against Bayern Munich, eventually progressing 6-5 on aggregate. It was not comfortable, especially late in the second leg, but PSG showed a level of maturity that had often been missing from previous versions of the club. That may be the biggest difference with this team.

PSG Finally Look Comfortable Under European Pressure

For years, PSG were seen as one of Europe’s most talented teams, but also one of its most fragile during knockout football. There were too many collapses, too many missed opportunities, and too many moments where pressure seemed to overwhelm them.

Winning the Champions League last season appears to have changed the mentality around the club completely. Instead of looking nervous in difficult moments, PSG now seem calmer and far more confident when games become chaotic. Against Bayern, they absorbed pressure, managed difficult spells, and still found a way to survive. That is usually the sign of a team that genuinely believes it belongs at the top level.

The comparison to Real Madrid’s legendary side from the late 2010s naturally carries huge weight. That Madrid team became famous for handling pressure better than anyone else in Europe. Whether it was Cristiano Ronaldo delivering in knockout games or Sergio Ramos stepping up in huge moments, they always found ways to win when it mattered most.

PSG are still far from matching that legacy historically, but reaching another final as defending champions is a serious statement. Now they move one step away from something even bigger.
