R Ashwin becomes the second-best all-rounder in the ICC Test Rankings, while Mayank Agarwal makes a significant leap.
Ravindra Jadeja has slid to fourth on the list lead by West Indies’ Jason Holder, Ashwin has moved up one spot to second among all-rounders.
In the revised ICC Rankings revealed on Wednesday, Indian batsmen Mayank Agarwal and Ravichandran Ashwin made significant gains.
While Agarwal has dropped to 11th in the Test batting rankings, Ashwin has remained second in the bowlers rankings and has risen to second in the all-rounders rankings. Ajaz Patel, a Mumbai-born spinner from New Zealand, has made significant progress since becoming only the third bowler to take 10 wickets in a Test innings.
In the latest weekly update to the men’s rankings, which is carried out on Wednesdays and includes all matches concluding on Tuesdays, Agarwal’s ‘Player of the Match’ heroics of 150 and 62 in the second Test against New Zealand at Mumbai helped him gain 30 spots and reach 11th position.
Ashwin, who was named ‘Player of the Series’ after taking 14 wickets in two Tests against New Zealand, has remained in second place behind Australia captain Pat Cummins in the rankings.
Ashwin has increased his rating by 43 points to 883, putting him 67 points ahead of third-placed Josh Hazlewood. While his colleague Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the Mumbai Test owing to a right forearm injury, has slid to fourth in the list lead by West Indies’ Jason Holder, he has moved up one place to second among all-rounders.
Patel, 33, has risen 23 places to 38th after taking 14 wickets in the second Test at Mumbai, becoming only the third player to take all ten wickets in a Test innings, following in the footsteps of Jim Laker and Anil Kumble. The left-arm spinner’s previous best ranking was 53rd, and he was ranked 62nd when the Test series against India began.
After the Mumbai Test, India opener Shubman Gill (up 21 places to 45th), fast bowler Mohammad Siraj (up four places to 41st), and New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell all rose in the rankings (up 26 places to 78th).
In Wednesday’s update, all-rounder Holder moved up one rank to 14th among bowlers, following the Galle Test, which Sri Lanka won by 164 runs to secure a 2-0 series victory. The batters that have moved up for the West Indies are Kraigg Brathwaite (up 10 places to 39th) and Nkrumah Bonner (up 17 places to 42nd).
But it is Player of the Match Dhananjaya de Silva, who has risen 12 places to 21st following his unbeaten 155 in the second innings, who has benefited the most from the Galle Test. Spinners Lasith Embuldeniya and Ramesh Mendis have also improved significantly.
After taking seven wickets in the match, Embuldeniya has moved up five places to 32nd, while Mendis has moved up 18 places to 39th with an 11-wicket haul.
