R Ashwin Sees Player-Cum-Coach Role In International Franchise Leagues After Retirement

3 Min Read

Since retiring from the IPL on August 27, several leagues have been known to have shown interest in R Ashwin, including Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). Given his understanding and strategy, the player-cum-coach role is being actively considered in several of these tournaments.

Ashwin’s Future: Player-Cum-Coach Dual Role

With his rich experience in both international and franchise cricket, R Ashwin is presently looking to test his waters in foreign T20 leagues. Interestingly, he wants to assume a dual role as player-cum-coach, utilizing his tactical knowledge and leadership skills. The shift appears to be a natural progression for a person who has been considered one of the most thoughtful heads of the game.

Target Leagues: MLC, The Hundred, ILT20, SA20 & Beyond

Ashwin is said to be eyeing participation in three or more foreign franchise leagues, and focusing on the following:

Major League Cricket (MLC), USA: A definite priority

The Hundred, England – A high likelihood

ILT20, UAE – High on his radar, particularly with the September 30 auction

SA20, South Africa – Unlikely this season because of completed squad lists and auction rules

Although the SA20 auction is on September 9, there is still a distant chance of a late signing outside the auction and salary cap. All the franchises, however, seem to have completed their selections.

ILT20 and Indian Ownership: A Strategic Advantage

The ILT20 in the UAE is an attractive avenue for Ashwin. With Indians controlling five of the six franchises, his inclusion would be as easy as it would be welcomed. There is one marquee signing outside the auction and salary cap each team is permitted, making Ashwin an ideal choice.

Interest from Global Leagues, Including Big Bash

Ever since his IPL retirement on August 27, several leagues are known to have expressed interest in R Ashwin, with the Big Bash League (BBL) of Australia among them. With his experience and strategic thinking, the role of player-cum-coach is being seriously contemplated in these tournaments.

Other Career Options: Commentating and Cricket Administration

After retirement, Ashwin also has promising avenues in cricket commentary and administration. Also known for his unconventional thinking, Ashwin is even rumored to have played a role in recent IPL retention rule amendments, BCCI sources have revealed.

Ashwin’s Statement: Living on His Own Terms

When asked about his plans after retirement, R Ashwin preferred keeping it vague. He said:

“I really want to enjoy my last couple of years hopefully without any judgements from anyone. I wanna live life on my terms.”
