Rabada Suspended: Provisional Ban For Recreational Drug Consumption

South African pacer Kagiso Rabada suspended after testing positive for a recreational drug. The incident, which occurred during the SA20 tournament earlier this year, resulted in Rabada’s sudden exit from the IPL 2025, where he was playing for the Gujarat Titans.

First, his IPL franchise mentioned a “serious personal issue” as the reason for his withdrawal. But now ESPNcricinfo has revealed that Rabada tested positive during the SA20 tournament, where he played for MI Cape Town in January and February.

Rabada Suspended: Cricketer Issues Public Apology

In an official statement released through the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), Rabada confirmed the positive drug test and expressed deep regret over his actions.

“I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons,” Rabada said. “This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug.

I am truly sorry to all whom I have disappointed. I will never forget the privilege of playing cricket. This privilege is much greater than me—it transcends my individual goals.”

He also added that he is serving a provisional suspension at present and is keen to resume professional cricket.

Support from Cricketing Bodies and Family

Rabada thanked his support network, including Cricket South Africa (CSA), SACA, his lawyers, and the Gujarat Titans.

“I’m not sure I could have survived this without a lot of other people,” he said. “I must thank my agent, CSA, and Gujarat Titans for standing by me through all of this. I must thank SACA and the legal advisors for giving me advice. But most importantly, I must thank family and friends for their love and understanding.”

Rabada was adamant that he still has the passion for the game and that he will not let this situation define his career.

Possible Duration of Rabada’s Suspension

While the exact length of Rabada’s sanction has not been determined, some references from similar cases can be helpful. For example, South African powerlifter Matt Bekker lost one month of his eligibility in 2021 for using THC. New Zealand cricketer Doug Bracewell was similarly given a lesser ban, of one month, after using cocaine and completing a treatment program.

Those experts who know the case believe the sanction placed on Rabada will go in the same direction. It is only a matter of time before the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), in conjunction with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), officially states the sanction.

Rabada Expected to Return for WTC Final

Even with the suspension, sources close to Cricket South Africa have confirmed there is no issue about Rabada missing future international games. He should be available for selection for the World Test Championship Final against Australia in June 2025.

Rabada Suspended but Seeking to Bounce Back

Though Rabada’s suspension is heartbreaking news, the fast bowler has been responsible and dedicated to rehabilitating himself personally and professionally. His return to top form and availability for future games, particularly milestone international matches, continues to be on schedule.
