Greatness: What is eSports? Is it fame, wealth, or glory? Or does a team stand out from the rest of the opposition due to some unique quality?
Success in esports can be difficult to pin down, but winning tournaments is undoubtedly the largest and most evident one. A team can achieve Tier 1 classification by having superstar players with enormous fan bases on its squad or even by bringing on a well-known investor.
Choosing which team (or game) to follow will be made easier if you are familiar with the major figures in the esports business.
100 Thrives
Known Call of Duty (CoD) player Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag founded the upstart esports group 100 Thieves (abbreviated 100T) in Los Angeles in 2017. 100T fields teams in League of Legends (LoL), Call of Duty (CoD), Fortnite: Battle Royale (also known as “Battle Royale”), and Clash Royale despite only entering the scene a few years ago.
Counter logic Gaming
In 2010, Counter Logic Gaming (CLG) began as a League of Legends (LoL) squad; since then, it has expanded into Smite, Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO), Super Smash Bros., and Fortnite.
One of the greatest steps by a traditional sports organization into the esports market, Madison Square Garden Company’s acquisition of a majority stake in CLG made headlines in 2017.
compLexity Gaming
CompLexity Gaming, also known as coL, is one of the earliest esports organizations in the world. It was established in 2003 as a group of Counterstrike 1.6 players. A wide variety of teams from the organization have competed in games including CS: GO, Dota 2, CoD, Clash Royale, Fortnite, Rocket League, and Madden, among others.
Echo Fox
When Rick Fox, a former NBA player, paid $1 million for Gravity Gaming’s LoL Championship Series (LCS) spot in 2015, he created Echo Fox. The squad then expanded to include CS: GO, CoD, Gears of War 4, and a wide variety of fighting games, such as Mortal Kombat X, Injustice 2, and Dragon Ball FighterZ. These titles are where the team has experienced the most successful thanks to the hiring of fighting games king Dominique “SonicFox” McLean.
PSG Esports
The well-known French football team Paris Saint-esports Germain’s division, PSG Esports, was established in 2016. It makes sense that PSG began with a FIFA team before expanding to other video games. One of the major esports organizations in China, LGD Gaming, which changed its name to PSG, inked the Dota 2 line-up with PSG in April 2018. LGD.
