Shubman Gill was named the new captain of the Indian cricket team for the Test format after the sudden retirement of the two senior-most players of the team in May during IPL 2025. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli declared their retirement from Test cricket back to back, where Rohit just lifted the T20 World Cup title in 2024 in Barbados and the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025.
In the 2025 Champions Trophy, Gill was handed over with the responsibility of vice-captain alongside Rohit for grooming the upcoming leader of the team after him.
Gill was phenomenal in the tournament and also performed exceptionally well in the IPL 2025, leading the Gujarat Giants and reaching the qualifiers.
His team’s performance was brilliant throughout the tournament, as the orange cap and purple cap were both held by his teammates, and at the end, Sai Sudharsan won the orange cap. Sai also got an opportunity to debut for Team India in whites in the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy 2025. Gill has aced the series by breaking enormous records as a captain and batter.
Records broken by Shubman Gill in the IND vs ENG Test Series
1. Most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series
Breaking the 47-year-old record of Sunil Gavaskar, Shubman Gill surpassed the Indian legend and became the highest scorer as an Indian captain in a Test series. Gavaskar made 732 runs in the IND vs WI Test series in 1978-79, and after nearly 5 decades, Gill broke the record at the Oval in the 5th Test. He got dismissed at 21 by a run out by Gus Atkinson and will look for another big score in his 2nd innings.
2. First Indian captain to score over 700+ runs in an away Test series
Gill became the first Indian captain to score 700+ runs in an away test in the 4th installment of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy 2025 at Old Trafford.
3. Most Centuries in a Debut Series as captain
In the IND vs ENG Test series 2025, Gill has already scored 4 centuries, making him the highest scorer of centuries as an Indian captain, breaking the world record for most centuries by a debutant Test captain in a Test series, and also the most by an Indian captain in England.
Only a handful of cricket legends like Don Bradman, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli managed to score 3 in their captaincy debut, but the young chap finally broke the existing records.
4. Fastest to 700 runs in a bilateral series by an Indian
Gill surpassed previous record holders like Gavaskar and his teammate Yashaswi Jaiswal by making the fastest 700 runs in a bilateral series as an Indian in terms of matches.
5. Equalled Most hundreds in a Test series
By hitting 4 centuries in the England tour with 1 innings still left, Gill equalled the records of legends like Sunil Gavaskar (1971) and Virat Kohli (2014-15) and also set a new record as an Indian captain.
6. Most runs in a Test series by an Indian captain (All Opponents)
Gill surpassed every Indian captain in the past to make the most runs in a Test series, being the captain of India not just in the England series but overall in terms of the most aggregate runs in a single series.
7. Top run scorer in Ander-Tendulkar Trophy 2025
In a total of 9 innings from the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy 2025, Gill has managed to score 743 runs and still has one innings. He is currently the highest scorer in the series with an average of 82, that too in England, and in his first tenure as a captain.
8. On the verge of breaking the most runs in a Test series by an Indian
Gavaskar made 774 runs in a single Test series in 1971 against the West Indies. Gill is now at 743 and just needs 32 runs to surpass this record, which is the closest any Indian has been.
9. Near World records of Bradman and others
Don Bradman holds the record for scoring the most runs in a Test series, making a total of 810 runs and 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes. Gill has an opportunity to rewrite a world record in his name.
