At the conclusion of its 2022 season, the National Football League (NFL), a professional American football league, will have 32 clubs. The National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC), both of which have four divisions with four clubs each, each receive an equal number of these teams. NFL game results have been kept track of since the league’s founding as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) in 1920. In the NFL, games can either have a winner and a loser, or they can conclude in a tie. When computing the win-loss %, ties are recorded as a half-win and a half-loss.
In this article, we will take a look at the greatest teams of NFL who have made the National Football League (NFL) an unparalleled success in the history of sports.
1971 Dallas Cowboys
The 1971 Dallas Cowboys season marked the team’s 12th in the National Football League (NFL), their first in the brand-new Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas, and their 12th with Tom Landry as their head coach. With 406 points scored, the Cowboys were first in the NFL. Their linebackers conceded 222 points. The Cowboys finished first for the sixth straight season. They won the NFC title for the second time in a row, and then they triumphed over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI to win their first Super Bowl trophy. They were the first NFC club to win a Super Bowl since the NFL and the American Football League (AFL) merged in 1970. They were also the first NFC East squad to win the championship.
1996 Green Bay Packers
The 1996 NFL season marked the 76th for the Green Bay Packers, their 78th overall, and their fifth under head coach Mike Holmgren. The team won their 12th NFL Championship, a league record, and third Super Bowl. The Packers finished the regular season with a league-best 13-3 won-loss record, going 8-0 at home and 5-3 away from home. The team stayed unbeaten at home for the first time since 1962. In addition, the Packers’ offence scored the most points in the NFL (456), while their defence surrendered the fewest points (210). Since the unbeaten 1972 Miami Dolphins, Green Bay was the only team to accomplish both feats in the same season. They had the top-ranked offence, defence, and special teams at the end of the season.
1989 San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers played their 40th season in the National Football League (NFL), 44th overall, and first under head coach George Seifert in 1989. The 49ers finished the regular season 14-2 and then went on one of the most dominant playoff runs in history, outscoring their opponents 126-26 to win their fourth Super Bowl and second straight, defeating the Broncos 55-10. For the first time since 1987, they ended with the best record in the NFL. Their two defeats were separated by a total of 5 points.
1972 Miami Dolphins
It was the Miami Dolphins’ eighth overall and third in the National Football League (NFL) in 1972. Don Shula, the team’s third-year head coach, guided them to the only perfect campaign in NFL history. In addition, they ranked first in the league for both points scored and points surrendered. Earl Morrall opened the rest of the regular season as the starting quarterback when starting quarterback Bob Griese fractured his ankle in Week 5. However, Griese replaced Morrall for the second half of the AFC Championship Game and started Super Bowl VII. Morrall, who was 38 years old at the time and had spent the majority of his career playing second fiddle to talents like Griese, Johnny Unitas, and Bobby Layne, was selected MVP in 1968 by Shula when the two led the Baltimore Colts to the NFL title. With Morrall at the helm, the Dolphins successfully defended their AFC East crown in Week 10.
1962 Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers’ 1962 campaign marked their 42nd in the National Football League and 44th overall. With a final record of 13-1 under coach Vince Lombardi, the group took first place in the Western Conference. In the NFL Championship Game, the Green Bay Packers defeated the New York Giants 16-7 to complete the season. This was the Packers’ second straight championship game victory over the Giants. This was the seventh NFL World Championship for the Packers. The 1962 Packers received the highest ranking of any Packers team, coming in at #9 on the list of the 100 greatest teams ever presented by the NFL on its 100th anniversary. Vince Lombardi coached two additional Green Bay teams among the top 100, at number 13 in 1966 and number 56 in 1967.
