Rajeev Shukla Takes Charge After Roger Binny Steps Aside: Roger Binny has stepped down as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and vice-president Rajeev Shukla has temporarily taken over. Sources told NDTV that Shukla will serve as the acting chief until fresh elections are held, which are expected in September.

Interestingly, Rajeev Shukla has plenty of experience with the board. Back in 2015, he was unanimously re-appointed as the chairman of the IPL, and on 18 December 2020, he was elected unopposed as BCCI’s vice-president.

Of course, Roger Binny could still continue as BCCI president – if he’s re-elected next month. If not, a new president will be chosen after September.

Apex Council Meeting and Sponsorship Challenges

At the latest BCCI Apex Council meeting on Wednesday, Rajeev Shukla officially took over as acting president, as reported by Dainik Jagran. The meeting’s main focus was to discuss Team India’s new lead sponsor, especially after Dream11 pulled out earlier this month.

With the Asia Cup beginning on September 9, finding a replacement sponsor in time is proving to be a big task. “We don’t even have two weeks left. We are trying, but floating a new tender, completing legal processes, and handling technicalities will take time. As for a short-term sponsor only for the Asia Cup, we are not going that way. Our focus is on securing a sponsor for the next two-and-a-half years, until the 2027 ODI World Cup in October-November,” the report said.

Elections Under Current Rules, Despite New Law

Even though the new National Sports Governance Act was passed in parliament earlier this month, BCCI elections in September will still be held under the existing rules. The reason? It will take around four to five months before the new law officially comes into effect.

For now, BCCI continues to function under its constitution, which was put in place after the Supreme Court approved the Lodha Committee’s recommendations. That also means any pending elections -whether for BCCI or state associations – will happen under these current rules.

Age Limits and Term Caps for Office Bearers

The Lodha Committee rules currently cap the age limit for BCCI officials at 70. But the new act has relaxed that a little, allowing those aged between 70 and 75 to contest, provided their international governing body’s byelaws permit it.

Another major point: no office bearer can continue beyond nine years in total, or six consecutive years, in the same role.

The report summed it up neatly: “If BCCI President Roger Binny had to step down, then state associations will also have to accept the same,” the report highlighted.
