Former India captain Rohit Sharma has added another remarkable milestone to his career. On Wednesday (29 October), the 38-year-old star climbed to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings, becoming the oldest cricketer ever to do so.
At 38 years and 182 days, the Mumbai-born opener rose two spots to claim the No. 1 position for the first time in his career, overtaking current India skipper Shubman Gill.
Brilliant Form Against Australia
Rohit Sharma’s return to the top spot comes after a fantastic series against Australia, where he scored 202 runs in three matches at an incredible average of 101. His unbeaten century in the series decider at the Sydney Cricket Ground not only helped India clinch the series but also reminded everyone why he’s considered one of the best openers in the world. Fittingly, he was named Player of the Series.

Rohit Sharma Tops the Table
With 781 rating points, Rohit Sharma now sits comfortably at No. 1. Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran follows him in second place with 764 points, while Shubman Gill has slipped to third with 745. Virat Kohli is placed sixth with 725 points after scoring an unbeaten 74 in the third ODI, and Shreyas Iyer has moved up to ninth despite not batting in the final match.
Climbing Back to the Top
Just last week, Rohit Sharma had 745 rating points. But thanks to his recent performances – 73 runs from 97 balls in the second ODI at Adelaide Oval and an unbeaten 121 from 125 deliveries in Sydney – he jumped to 781 points. Those two knocks were enough to push him past his competitors.
Joining an Elite Indian Club
Having already led India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit Sharma now joins a special list of Indian greats who have held the top ODI batting ranking. That elite group includes Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli Slip, Iyer Breaks Into Top 10
Shubman Gill, who had been sitting at No. 1 since late last year, struggled in the series against Australia with scores of 10, 9, and 24. Kohli, despite a strong knock in the final game, slipped one spot in the rankings. On the brighter side, Shreyas Iyer’s half-century in Adelaide helped him enter the top 10 for the first time.
Bowling Rankings: Hazlewood and Santner on the Rise
In the latest ICC ODI bowlers’ rankings, Australia’s Josh Hazlewood climbed two spots to eighth, while India’s Kuldeep Yadav dropped from sixth to seventh. Adam Zampa, who took four wickets in the second ODI, moved up to 12th. New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner also made a strong move, jumping three places to fourth after some consistent performances.
Rohit Sharma’s latest achievement is yet another reminder that age is just a number when talent, fitness, and determination come together.
