Rohith Krishna S Becomes India’s 89th Grandmaster
Rohith Krishna S became India’s 89th Grandmaster at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup held in Kazakhstan. This came after he secured his third and final GM norm, with a win against Armenian International Master Artur Davtyan in the tournament’s last round. Finishing with six points out of nine games, Rohith also crossed the important 2500 Elo rating mark, completing all criteria needed for the Grandmaster title.
A Quick Learner

Rohith Krishna S’s achievement is even more impressive because his journey only began earlier this year with his first GM norm earned by winning the Hotel Stockholm North GM Round-Robin tournament in March. Then he earned his second norm at the Dubai Open in June. He had already been an International Master since 2022, steadily climbing the ranks, showing continuous improvement, and growth in the game.
Multitasking His Way To Glory
What makes Rohith Krishna S’s story stand out is how he managed to balance his academics alongside his chess career. He is currently an engineering student at SSN College of Engineering in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Balancing studies and chess training is no easy feat for any student, but for Rohith, it was an easy game.

Earlier this year, a turning point came when Rohith won a silvermedal at the Commonwealth Championships in Malaysia. That success boosted his confidence and set the pace for the milestones he would reach in the months that followed.
India’s chess scene keeps growing stronger with every new Grandmaster, reflecting the country’s increasing passion for the game. Rohith Krishna S’s success is a shining example for young chess players dreaming big.
