  • Tabletop

The Tabletop RPGs are said to be conducted over discussion in social gatherings. There is the involvement of the game master (GM), who takes care of the rules and settings that are to be followed by the players. And, the other players talk about the intended actions of their characters, while the GM talks about the results or outcomes. Also, some of the outcomes are determined by the game system, whereas some are selected by the GM. However, RPGs were first popularised in this format, and the first  RPG, “Dungeons & Dragons” (D&D),  is said to be inspired by fantasy literature and the wargaming hobby, which was published in 1974.

  • Live Action

The Live action RPG (LARP) is the format where the participants need to act out their characters’ actions rather than describing them, while the real environment is used for the purpose of representing the imaginary setting of the game world. In this variety, the players sometimes dress up like their characters and use appropriate props. Also, the venue might be decorated in order to resemble the fictional setting.

  • Electronic Media

The TRPGs is said to be translated into a variety of electronic formats, further the digital role-playing games have been classified into two groups; single-player games which use RPG-style mechanics, and multiplayer games which incorporate social interaction. However, such electronic games often share settings and rules with tabletop RPGs, but focus on the character advancement more than  storytelling.
