The Rome Marathon 2025 saw thousands of runners vying for the Italian glory on March 16 (Sunday).
As a precursor to the event, Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force aerobatic squadron, flew over the Imperial Forums just minutes before the start.
Before the race commenced at the Colosseum, athletes observed 42 seconds of silence in honor of Pope Francis, symbolizing the marathon’s 42-kilometer distance.
The Rome Marathon 2025 saw Kenyan runners dominating the field. Robert Ngeno claimed victory in the men’s competition with 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 35 seconds, taking a convincing lead in the final kilometers and securing his first major win in the Italian capital. It was also a new personal best for the Kenyan.
“I am very happy with this victory, I took the lead after the 35km and I managed to keep the pace. It was beautiful to run on the streets of Rome,” said Ngeno.
In the women’s category, another Kenyan, Betty Chepkwony dominated the race, taking home the gold in 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 16 seconds, clinching a commanding victory over her competitors.
This marks the second consecutive year that Kenyan runners have won both the men’s and women’s titles in Rome, a feat that was last achieved in 2021.
However, no new course records were set this year and the current records remain:
- Women’s record: Kebede Megertu Alemu (Ethiopia) – 2:22:52 (2019)
- Men’s record: Asbel Rutto (Kenya) – 2:06:24 (2024)
