The five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo was furious after his goal against Serbia was denied in the injury time. He went to the tunnel by throwing his captain armband. The Juventus star player thought it was a clear goal and was not happy with the assistant referee’s decision.
Portugal was in lead till the half-time with Diego Jota’s two stunning goals. In the second half, the Euro Champions were a little sloppy and the lead slipped from their hands. Ronaldo in injury time took a shot and stabbed the Serbian goalkeeper Stefan Mitrovic. Ronaldo was convinced that the ball has crossed the line, and the TV replays appeared to back up the assessment, but the referee assistant did not give the goal.
Ronaldo was protesting for it and was cautioned by referee Danny Makkelie. Soon after the incident happened Ronaldo was found stormed off the pitch leaving his Captain armband behind.
The Juventus star, later on, took to Instagram to explain his actions. He said “Being captain of the Portugal team is one of the greatest privileges of my life and fills with pride. I always give and will give everything for my country, that will never change.”
“But there are difficult times to deal with, especially when we feel that an entire nation is being harmed”.
Portugal is now level on points with Serbia in the WC qualifiers with 4 points. Based on goal difference, the European champions are second in Group A.
