SA vs IRE: Van Niekerk’s Power Cameo And Tunnicliffe’s Fifty Seal Series Win For South Africa

3 Min Read

SA vs IRE: Faye Tunnicliffe’s sedate half-century, along with a destructive cameo from Dane Van Niekerk, set up another massive total as South Africa powered to a commanding 65-run win over Ireland in the second T20I of the SA vs IRE series in Paarl, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead.

South Africa Post Second Consecutive 200+ Total

Batting first, South Africa made 201 for 5, their second successive 200-plus total in the SA vs IRE contest. Van Niekerk, playing her comeback series, let loose a blistering 19-ball 41, smashing three fours and three sixes. Her power-hitting helped her surpass Lizelle Lee’s record of most sixes by a South African woman in T20Is, which stood at 49.

Chloe Tryon finished strong with an impressive performance, hitting 16 from 7 balls, helping the team to a winning test score over 200 runs. Faye Tunnicliffe established the basis for the innings by scoring her first T20I fifty, which was made possible by scoring 40 runs.

The crucial opening partnership of 78 runs stitched by Tunnicliffe and Sune Luus saw South Africa gain a strong platform in the match between SA vs IRE. Aimee Maguire was the standout for Ireland, returning figures of 3 for 43 to dismiss Tunnicliffe, Luus, and captain Laura Wolvaardt.

Ireland’s Chase Falters Despite Prendergast’s Fight

The chase for Ireland did not start with any real momentum, as they managed only 33 runs in the power play without losing a wicket. Chloe Tryon was able to take two quick wickets, removing both openers (Amy Hunter and Gaby Lewis) by the seventh over, leaving Ireland 35 for 2.

Even though Ireland were never near the requisite run-rate, Orla Prendergast starred with an unbeaten 51* off 43 while Leah Paul made 40 off 29 as the two shared a fighting 76-run stand. While Prendergast did get to her half-century in the last over, by that time South Africa had sealed the match and the series between SA vs IRE.
