The SA20 final is now all set to go off with a bang, at South Africa’s cricket bastion, the Wanderers, where defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) will lock horns with Mumbai Indians Cape Town (MICT) in the SA20 season finale. This is the final of an exciting SA20 season, with a full house looking forward to either a new champion or the same team to retain the title. This is actually a repeat of the season opener, where both teams are looking to assert their dominance after some thrilling performances.
SEC’s Quest for a Three-Peat
Led by captain Aiden Markram, SEC seeks to make history by winning its third title consecutively. Despite having three matches in four days, which include the Eliminator and Qualifier 2, SEC remained on track. Markram understands that the busy schedule is very physically and mentally demanding but says his team has what it takes to come through in the final.
Opening Batting: A Clash of Styles
One of the areas of contrast between the two finalists is in opening combinations. The top-order combination of MICT, comprising Ryan Rickelton and Rassie van der Dussen, was simply spectacular during the group stage. In total, the pair amassed 523 runs at an average of 58.11. They have plenty of experience playing at the Wanderers, which certainly gives them an edge going into this final.
On the other hand, SEC’s opening combination has struggled throughout the competition, with Tony de Zorzi and David Bedingham averaging just 12.40. However, both players have shown improvement in recent matches, with de Zorzi especially impressive with a powerful 49-ball 78 in Qualifier 2 against Paarl Royals. Markram is confident that both de Zorzi and Bedingham can step up in the final, especially with de Zorzi’s growing form and mental strength.
Bowling Showdown: Pacers to Shine
Wanderers’ pitch, known for its bounce and pace, would be expected to favor seamers in the final. The most successful seam attack in the group stage was SEC’s, courtesy of Marco Jansen. With 41 wickets, he has been one of the main reasons behind the success of the team, as his extra bounce and powerplay success are important assets. However, Ottneil Baartman will be watched very closely because he left the field during Qualifier 2. If he does not play, then a younger Andile Simelane may be drafted into the team. That will, however, mean the loss of experience for SEC.
MICT’s seam attack is quite strong, but Corbin Bosch has been the standout for them with 10 wickets in the tournament. Bosch is very motivated as he wants to be included in South Africa’s Champions Trophy squad, as Anrich Nortje is missing out.
A strong performance in the final can make Bosch a strong contender for that spot.
Coaching Influence: Leading the Teams to Victory
Where the game will be in the limelight, the contributions of coaches in the background have been vital for the teams to reach the final. SEC’s coach, Adi Birrell, has been important in guiding the team to two titles under his guidance. His calm character and strong values have earned him respect among the players so Markram described him as a “grandfather figure” in the dressing room.
The coach of MICT, Robin Peterson, was said to be the chief contributor to the transformation of his team. Peterson has succeeded over the past few very trying seasons in turning MICT into a positive and concentrated unit. Rashid Khan, who enjoys a good rapport with Peterson dating back to their time at MI New York, complimented the coach for offering steadfast backing and creating a winning environment.
