Prior to the auctions, the six SA20 franchises submitted a list of the players they would like to keep. For the second season of South Africa’s domestic franchise-based tournament, these retentions have been made. The auctions for the upcoming season will be held by Cricket South Africa (CSA) on September 27.
There will be fifteen auction picks available among the six clubs in the SA20 auction, in addition to the new Rookie player that each franchise must select, as the SA20 announced the list of pre-signed and retained players ahead of the second season.
A South African who is under 22 and has never played in the SA20 must be the rookie player. Each organisation is also entitled to one wildcard pick, which must be announced before December 30, in addition to the rookie player and auction picks. Only MI and Sunrisers have announced their wildcard picks, and both teams have signed England pacers Jofra Archer and Craig Overton. Each squad may have a roster of up to 19 players, with a minimum of 10 South African players, a maximum of seven players from outside, and one South African rookie player.
There has been an increase in the purse sizes of the franchises. The purse size has increased to R39.1 million from R34 million (previous season).
