The iQFOiL Sailing World Championships is set to get underway in the waters of Aarhus Bay in Denmark from 4 to 11 July. This marks the first world title of the new Olympic cycle.
Six medallists from the Paris Olympics 2024 will be looking to be crowned as world champions.
Italy’s Marta Maggetti, who claimed gold in the women’s event, will battle again with silver medallist Sharon Kantor of Israel and Great Britain’s bronze medallist Emma Wilson, in the waters of Marseille.
Kantor is the defending champion from Lanzarote in 2024. She will be looking to fend off Wilson, the silver medallist in Spain, and compatriot Katy Spychakov, the third-place finisher last time out.
Israel’s Tom Reuveny, the Olympic champion in the men’s competition, will be challenged by the likes of Australia’s silver medallist Grae Morris, and Luuc van Opzeeland of the Netherlands, who claimed the final podium spot in Paris 2024.
Opzeeland, a three-time world medallist, including the winner in 2023, will be looking to wrest the world title back from last year’s winner, Italy’s Nicolò Renna, after claiming bronze behind silver medallist Paweł Tarnowski.
“This World Championship is a milestone for our class,” commented Gonzalo Costa Hoevel, iQFOiL International Class Manager. “It’s the first major event of the new Olympic cycle and the level is incredibly high – with the full Paris podium, top talents from every continent, and new nations joining the game.
“The iQFOiL is growing fast, and events like this show just how exciting and global our sport has become. We can’t wait to see what unfolds on the water this week in Aarhus.”
“It’s going to be something special racing at home in Aarhus,” said Danish Olympian Johan Søe. “We’re ready – and I hope to see a big crowd on the waterfront!”.
