Close to Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) all-important match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, rumors broke on social media regarding Rishabh Pant’s existence with the franchise. A reporter on X (previously Twitter) asserted that LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was contemplating releasing Rishabh Pant before the IPL 2026 season.
For perspective, Rishabh Pant was the costliest player in IPL history when Sanjiv Goenka’s LSG signed him for a record Rs 27 crore at the 2025 IPL Mega Auction that took place in Jeddah. Even though there had been much hype, the left-handed batsman has had a below-par season, scoring only 135 runs from 11 games, averaging 12.27 with a strike rate of 100.
LSG Flounders Under Pant’s Leadership
Pant’s inaugural season as captain has not been successful. With only five victories in 12 matches, the Lucknow Super Giants are seventh on the points table and out of playoff contention. These disappointing performances have reinforced suspicions about his retention, particularly considering the heavy financial outlay by Sanjiv Goenka.
Pant Blasts Media Reports, Labels Them ‘Fake News’
Reacting to the rumors, Rishabh Pant took to X and categorically denied the allegations, blaming the journalist for spreading misinformation. He tweeted:
“I get that fake News provides more traction to content, but let’s not build everything around it. Little sense and genuine news will serve more than creating fake news with an agenda. Thanks, have a good day. Let’s be responsible and sensible about what we share on social media.”
Pant’s International Comeback in Jeopardy
Pant’s disappointing IPL 2025 form can also impact his return to India’s T20I team. While he last played for the T20I in July 2024, his weak batting form this season may further demote his comeback.
Is Sanjiv Goenka Letting Go of Rishabh Pant
Though Sanjiv Goenka and LSG have not made any formal statement yet, Rishabh Pant’s forceful denial and belief in the franchise’s backing indicate that he might still be on their radar despite a dismal season. Nonetheless, with a Rs 27 crore price tag and unimpressive returns, the pressure is bound to increase before the 2026 season.
