Sanju Samson yesterday, became only the second Rajasthan Royals captain after Shane Warne to defeat Chennai Super Kings at their home. Rajasthan beat Chennai at their home in 2008 and after a wait of 15 years, they managed to do so again.
The game was pretty much in RR’s bag as CSK required 40 runs in the last two overs. Everyone would have thought the match to be over if MS Dhoni was not at the crease for the death overs. Sanju Samson gave the ball to Jason Holder for the penultimate over. Holder conceded two sixes and his over went for 19 runs.
With 21 runs to defend, Sanju Samson handed the ball to Sandeep Sharma who started off with two wides. After a great dot ball, Sandeep went for 2 consecutive sixes. With 7 runs required in the last three balls, Sandeep switched to round the wicket to bowl the final three balls. He went for two consecutive singles and had to defend 5 runs with one ball. Sandeep kept his cool as he nailed the yorker perfectly on the final ball.
Sanju Samson after the game
Samson after the game said that he was worried about the game being extended to the last ball. Samson believes that one has to respect MS Dhoni. The Royals captain said that he spends a lot of time with analysts and studies data but he later said that “Nothing works against him. (MS Dhoni)”
Samson could have easily been one of those captains who failed to win at Chepauk. With the being almost in their control to losing the plot in such a manner one would think that Royals could have easily ended up on the losing side.
Dhoni along with Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best finishing duos in the IPL in the last few years. With Devon Conway dismissed in the 15th over CSK was left reeling at 113 runs with 6 wickets when Dhoni came in to partner with Jadeja. They shared an unbeaten 59-run stand for the 7th wicket in just 30 balls. In the end, they managed to save face as they lost the game by only a small margin of three runs.
