IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians have suffered a significant setback with Mitchell Santner being ruled out of IPL 2026. The all-rounder picked up a left shoulder injury during their clash against Chennai Super Kings on April 24 at the Wankhede Stadium, and hasn’t recovered in time to take any further part in the tournament.
Santner Injury amid IPL 2026
The injury occurred in the 17th over when Santner pulled off a full-length diving catch to send Kartik Sharma back to the pavilion. He immediately grabbed his left shoulder in discomfort and was soon attended to by the medical staff. Later, he was seen in the dugout with his arm supported in a sling and an ice pack strapped on, confirming the seriousness of the blow.
Who steps in for Santner?
To fill the void left by Mitchell Santner, Mumbai Indians have brought in South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj. A seasoned campaigner for the Proteas, Maharaj has built a reputation for his tight lines, control, and knack for keeping batters under constant pressure since his international debut in 2016.

In a curious twist, Maharaj was picked for South Africa’s squad at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 before he had even featured in a T20I. When he eventually got his chance leading the side against Sri Lanka national cricket team he made an instant impression by striking with his very first ball in the format.
Maharaj also brings leadership experience to the table, having captained sides both internationally and in franchise cricket. His recent numbers underline his effectiveness, with 31 wickets from his last 30 T20 outings, including a best of 3 for 15. Off the field, he was part of the support group for the South Africa women’s national cricket team during their 4-1 T20I series win over Harmanpreet Kaur’s India.
Currently stuck in the lower half of the standings, Mumbai Indians will aim to turn things around when they face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 29 at the Wankhede Stadium.
