3 Min Read

Despite the new setup, doubles specialists Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori successfully defended their crown. The US Open mixed doubles tournament was played in a revamped version with singles tennis stars also featuring in the competition.

Errani and Vavassori defeated singles star duo of  Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 in the final to lift the US Open mixed doubles trophy.

Errani and Vavassori made a strong start, taking the first set 6-3 by capitalising on early momentum and unforced errors from Swiatek, including a crucial missed forehand.

Although the Italians broke again early in the second, Swiatek and Ruud mounted a spirited comeback to level the match 7-5, forcing a decisive 10-point match tiebreak. In the end, the Italians relied on their experience to surpass their opponents 10-6 to retain their title.

“We showed today that doubles is a great product. I think in the future we need more marketing and visibility. I think this product is something that can also work in the future. It was amazing to play on this court with so many people. I have to say thanks from the bottom of my heart for the atmosphere”, Errani said after the win

“I think this one is for all the doubles players that couldn’t play this tournament. I think this one is also for them.”

A total of 16 teams featured in the  2025 US Open mixed doubles event, which means the draw size was reduced to half from the previous editions. Organisers said they had to reinvent the event as it had failed to generate interest from fans.

However, the revised format drew criticism as doubles specialists voiced concerns that the emphasis on singles rankings devalued both the integrity of the Grand Slam title and the discipline of doubles itself.

Errani and Vavassori were, notably, the only true doubles specialists among the all the participating teams.

Now, all focus shifts to the main singles draw where Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka will be bidding to defend their respective crowns.
