World number one Novak Djokovic praised the success of Chinese male tennis players Zhang Zhizhen and Wu Yibing in a recent interview with Xinhua, highlighting their impressive performances in 2023. Djokovic emphasized the importance of the rise of Chinese male players, citing their breakthroughs into the top 100 and top 50 as inspirational for the sport’s growth in the country. He noted the historical achievements of Zhang, the first Chinese male to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP 1000 tournament, and Wu, the first to secure an ATP Tour trophy.

Djokovic recognized China’s dominance in women’s tennis but stressed the need for male players to break into the top ranks. Zhang’s ascent to No. 52 in the world rankings and Wu’s reaching a career-high of No. 54 showcased their significant contributions.
