Shubman Gill

Team India’s Test captain Shubman Gill made history with a brilliant century in the first innings of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. He became part of an elite group of Indian captains – including Virat Kohli – to score 150 or more runs in a SENA country (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).

Shubman Gill Shines with a Century at Edgbaston

India wrapped up Day 1 on a strong note, reaching 310/5 thanks to an unbeaten 99-run stand between Gill and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Shubman Gill did not get out on 114, while Jadeja gave solid support with 41 runs.

On Day 2, the duo continued to bat confidently through most of the first session. Jadeja brought up his fifty, and Gill went on to reach the 150-run mark on Thursday, July 3. Eventually, Josh Tongue managed to break the partnership by dismissing Jadeja, who played a fine knock of 89 off 137 balls, hitting 10 fours and a six.

Shubman Gill added another feather to his cap by matching a record held by Mohammad Azharuddin – scoring centuries in back-to-back Test matches on English soil. After his impressive 147 at Leeds, Shubman Gill followed it up with another hundred at Edgbaston.

He reached the 150-run milestone with a simple single off his 263rd ball, becoming only the second Indian captain to score 150 or more in a Test innings in England. The first to do so was Azharuddin, who smashed 179 at Manchester back in 1990.

Virat Kohli holds the third-highest score by an Indian skipper in England with 149 runs off 225 balls during the 2018 Test in Birmingham. With these two centuries, Gill joins Azharuddin in a rare club – the only Indian captains to score consecutive hundreds in a Test series in England.

Top Scores by Indian Captains in Test Matches in England:

  4. MAK Pataudi – 148 at Leeds (1967)

Before him, the last two to achieve this feat were legends of the game. Sachin Tendulkar scored 169 at Cape Town back in 1997, and more than 20 years later, Virat Kohli made 153 at Centurion in 2018.
