Shubman Gill
India captain Shubman Gill has been named among the three nominees for the ICC Player of the Month award for July 2025, alongside South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder and England skipper Ben Stokes.
Shubman Gill shone in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, guiding a young Indian team to a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
The 25-year-old was in sensational form, scoring 754 runs across the five Tests, including four centuries and a double hundred, at an average of 75.40. This incredible run broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 732 runs for an Indian captain in a five-Test series. It also placed Gill second on the all-time list for captains, behind only Sir Donald Bradman’s 810 runs.
The ICC praised Shubman Gill’s outstanding month:
“Shubman Gill had a sensational month, amassing 567 runs at an impeccable average of 94.50 in three Tests during India’s gripping series in England,” the ICC wrote on its website.
“He played a starring role in India’s record-breaking win at Edgbaston, where he scored a monumental 269 in the first innings followed by 161 in the second. His combined 430 runs across the two innings is the second highest tally, next only to Graham Gooch’s 456,” it added.
Shubman Gill also earned praise for stepping up to bat at No. 4 and taking over from Virat Kohli with style.
“His consistency at No. 4, carrying on the baton from all-time great Virat Kohli, provided stability and flair in equal measure, and combined with his extraordinary captaincy in his debut series,” the ICC noted.
In his very first series as South Africa’s Test captain, Wiaan Mulder produced a record-breaking performance against Zimbabwe. He scored 531 runs at a staggering average of 265.50, including a composed 147 in the first Test. His standout moment came in the second Test in Bulawayo, where he smashed an unbeaten 367, the highest individual score in South Africa’s Test history.
Remarkably, Mulder declared the innings when he was within touching distance of Brian Lara’s world record of 400 not out set in 2004.
“Mulder also chipped in with the ball, claiming seven wickets at just 15.28 apiece, including a four-wicket haul in the first Test,” the ICC added.
England captain Ben Stokes also made the shortlist thanks to his match-winning performances against India. He scored 251 runs at an average of 50.20 and took 12 wickets at 26.33, delivering in crucial moments with both bat and ball.
“His leadership proved crucial in maintaining England’s intensity and belief in a closely contested series. With ball in hand, he bowled long spells, often breaking key partnerships and turning the tide in England’s favour,” the ICC said.
The winner of the ICC Player of the Month for July 2025 will be decided by a combination of an expert panel and fan votes, making it an exciting race between three in-form captains who lit up the cricketing world in July.
