In an exciting development, India’s young batting sensation Shubman Gill has been announced as the new captain of the Indian Test team. The significant decision came ahead of the much-awaited five-match home Test series against the England cricket team, which will mark the beginning of a new World Test Championship cycle. The highly anticipated series between India and England is scheduled to kickstart from 20th June.
Shubman Gill Replaces Rohit Sharma As India’s New Test Captain
Shubman Gill has taken over the reins by replacing Rohit Sharma, who recently resigned from Test captaincy. The much-awaited Test series between England and India will officially mark the start of a new era in red-ball cricket under the leadership of Shubman Gill and following the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli. These players played a significant role in the success of the Indian cricket team in Test cricket in the past few years. In the absence of these players, the Indian cricket team is all set to undergo a major transformation.
Shubman Gill has been selected as the Test captain ahead of the names like Jasprit Bumrah, who has already captained the Indian cricket team three Tests, including two matches in the absence of Rohit in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and Rishabh Pant, who has impressed one and all with his batting heroics in the white jersey.

At 25 years of age, Shubman Gill has become one of the youngest players to hold the position in recent years. Gill has captained the Indian cricket team for a T20I assignment in Zimbabwe in 2024, however, he still lacks experience in the red-ball format. Currently, Gill is captaining the Gujarat Titans team in the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League.
Apart from this, Gill has captained the team in only 5 first-class games. He has been serving as the vice-captain of the Men in Blue in the white-ball format. He was also the vice-captain of the team India’s epic Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE in February 2025.
Talking about his performance with the bat, in Test cricket, Shubman has amassed 1,893 runs in 32 games. He has slammed five centuries and has played several match-winning knocks.
Meanwhile, as soon as the BCCI announced the big news, social media started buzzing with amazing reactions to it. From memes to tributes, fans started hailing Shubman Gill for his latest achievement.
