Why Shubman Gill Is The Perfect Choice For Leading Test Format: Recently, BCCI revealed the squad for the ENG vs IND tour of 5 Tests from 20th June to 31st July. After the retirement of the two biggest star batters of India- Rohit Sharma (7th May) and Virat Kohli (12th May).
India lost their top order batsmen and a captain who was a big shoe to fill, and the BCCI announced Shubman Gill as the new captain of India in the Test format. Rishabh Pant was named as the vice-captain for the team, and both will commence this in the England tour.
3 reasons why Shubman Gill is the perfect choice for leading the Test format
Opener’s spot– Recently, after the retirement of Rohit Sharma, the team needed a new opener or a top-order batsman in the team along with Virat Kohli’s spot, and Gill was the one who has been monitored by the selectors throughout the tournaments, right fromthe ODI World Cup 2023 to Champions Trophy 2025. Gill was named the vice-captain for the Champions Trophy 2025 and also the captain of the Gujarat Giants, which has been doing great in the IPL 2025 season as well.
Other than Gill, there were no other leading skilled batsmen who could have handled the captaincy for India. A possible contender would have been Shreyas Iyer, for whom the selectors said – Shreyas had a good one-day series, played well in domestic as well, but right now there’s no room in test cricket.
Senior’s Irregularity– Jasprit Bumrah was a perfect choice for the Test Captain of India, but because his fitness has become an issue, and his participation in all the matches is not confirmed, he was not the right choice for captain, according to the BCCI.
KL Rahul was also handed over the captaincy role earlier in South Africa for white ball and during Test as well in 2021, but he withdrew from the role due to his performance abilities. Here’s what Ajit Agarkar stated- Don’t think he’ll be available for all five Tests. Whether it’s four or three, we’ll see based on how the series goes and his workload is. Even if he’s fit for 3-4 Tests, he’ll be an asset for us. Just happy he’s part of the squad.
More important to us a player. Once you’re managing people, there’s a lot that takes out of you. We’ve had a chat with him, he’s okay with it. He knows where his body’s at. KL not really, he’s captained a while back, he’s a quality player and hope he has a big series. With Booms, it was more about his workload management.
Promising Youngster– Shbman was the captain of the U-19 Indian team as well, where he became the Player of the tournament, along with securing the title.

His fitness has also not been a major issue for the team, which makes him the right choice for remaining a captain for a longer time. He is 25 years old and could be groomed to become a great captain for the team in the upcoming years.
