Young Indian batsman Shubman Gill has unveiled the secret to his successful ODI partnership with captain Rohit Sharma, highlighting that Sharma’s approach gives players the liberty to express their playing style.

In the nine instances where they batted together in the format, Gill and Sharma have amassed a combined total of 685 runs at an average of 76.11. Excluding their partnership when not opening the batting, their average partnership surges to an impressive 85.37.

This partnership’s effectiveness will undoubtedly be crucial to India’s campaign in the Cricket World Cup, as the team aims to replicate their success from 2011.

“It’s a fantastic feeling to open the batting alongside him, especially knowing that all the attention is on him. He’s the kind of player who encourages his fellow batters to express themselves freely and play the game according to their own style. He grants players the complete freedom to showcase their game,” Gill commented, as quoted by the ICC website.

Their opening stands have seen them surpass the fifty-run mark in six out of eight instances. Notably, they put together a partnership of 143 runs against Sri Lanka in Guwahati and an impressive 212 runs against New Zealand in Indore earlier this year.

Their differing batting strategies and scoring strengths have been instrumental in their success, making it challenging for rival bowlers and captains to devise effective strategies for each of them.

“Rohit has different areas he targets compared to me. He prefers going aerial during the Powerplay,” Gill explained when discussing their distinct playing styles. “On the other hand, I focus on finding gaps and accumulating boundaries. He’s someone who excels at hitting sixes. This combination proves to be very effective,” Gill further added.

Gill and Sharma will reunite during the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka before engaging in a three-match ODI series against Australia on home turf, a prelude to the Cricket World Cup. Following this, they will once again face Australia in their World Cup campaign opener in Chennai on October 8.
