Shubman Gill Struggles On Domestic Return In Vijay Hazare Trophy

3 Min Read

Indian cricket sensation Shubman Gill had a disappointing first outing back into domestic cricket, getting out cheaply in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Punjab opener, who had recently had issues with form on the international stage, was also plagued by the same problems on domestic cricket as he failed to impress with the bat.

Recent International Setbacks for Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill had been India’s Test and ODIs captain but could not make it to the T20 World Cup squad. Later, although he got selected for Asia Cup and awarded vice-captaining responsibilities as well, still, he could not do much to convert chances into performances.

Inconsistencies in his performances meant that he was left out at the eleventh hour, and Ishan Kishan is set to make a comeback after two years.

Return to Domestic Cricket Under BCCI Guidelines

According to BCCI rules, it is mandatory for centrally contracted players to take part in home tournaments when they are not playing international cricket.

With Team India having a lack of activity in international cricket, the Vijay Hazare Trophy proved to be an optimum situation for Gill to get back into action before the series against New Zealand. However, his eagerly awaited comeback in List-A cricket did not go as he had anticipated.

Goa’s Innings: Suyash and Lalit put some resistance

In Punjab vs Goa, Goa decided to play first and bat, but they faced tough bowling. Punjab’s bowling line-up knocked down the top order, putting Goa under immense pressure.

Lalit Yadav scored 54runs But despite these half centuries, Goa could not gain any momentum and got bowled out for a modest score of 211 runs.

Shubman Gill Dismissed for 11

Punjab’s chase also had a shaky start. Shubman Gill could score just 11 runs off 12 balls, featuring two boundaries, before getting dismissed. His dismissal gave a glimmer of hope to Goa regardless of the meager score. Gill had missed thelastmatch for some undisclosed reason, which makes his innings even more important for his comeback story.

Match Situation at the Time of Writing

Goa responded with determination, picking up early wickets and keeping the contest alive. Punjab were 65 for 3 in 16 overs, with:

  • Harnoor Singh unbeaten on 29
  • Naman Dhir at the crease on 4
