Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee has formally accepted the decision of senior cricketer Lahiru Thirimanne to step down from participating in all forms of international cricket.

This move comes after Lahiru Thirimanne conveyed his intention to retire from international cricket by submitting a resignation letter to Sri Lanka Cricket.

During a recent meeting, the Executive Committee unanimously approved Thirimanne’s resignation, as announced in a press release by Sri Lanka Cricket on Friday.

Ashley De Silva, the CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, extended well wishes to Thirimanne for his future pursuits and highlighted his valuable contributions to Sri Lanka Cricket across all formats of the game.

Thirimanne’s international career spanned 44 Test matches, 127 ODIs, and 26 T20Is, where he accumulated over 5500 runs for his country.

Thirimanne, aged 33, shared his retirement decision on social media on July 23, effectively concluding a career that saw him represent Sri Lanka in 44 Tests, 127 ODIs, and 26 T20Is since his debut in 2010.

In his Facebook post, Thirimanne expressed his deep gratitude for the honour of representing his nation and announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, acknowledging mixed emotions.

Throughout his career, the stylish left-handed batsman notched three Test centuries and four ODI hundreds. He was also a part of Sri Lanka’s victorious team in the 2014 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Mirpur, contributing to a memorable triumph over India in the final.

Thirimanne played a role in three T20 World Cup campaigns and featured in Sri Lanka’s most recent 50-over World Cup appearances in 2015 and 2019.

Lahiru Thirimanne’s final match for Sri Lanka took place in the second Test against India in Bengaluru in March of the previous year, where he faced dismissal for eight and zero. With his retirement, Thirimanne leaves behind a notable legacy in international cricket.
