Second-Fastest Triple Century in Test History

Scoring his triple hundred in only 297 balls, Wiaan Mulder achieved the second-quickest triple century in Test cricket by deliveries received. Virender Sehwag (278 deliveries) was the only quicker player, and in third position comes England’s Harry Brook (310 deliveries).

No one else before Don Bradman (1930) and Matthew Hayden (2003) had made it to this rarefied territory.

Mulder’s 367* was in the first innings of a match after South Africa was made to bat only the third such occasion in Test history. The other two? Graham Gooch (333 in 1990) and Hayden (380 in 2003).

South Africa’s Third 350+ in First-Class Cricket

Mulder’s score made him the third South African to have scored 350+ in first-class cricket, following:

Stephen Cook -390 (2009)

Barry Richards – 356 (1970/71)

It was also the third triple-century scored in Zimbabwe in first-class cricket history.

Record Gap Between Top Two Scores in an Innings

The 285-run difference between Mulder (367)* and the next highest scorer David Bedingham (82) is the third-largest margin between the top two scores in a Test innings.

Boundary Bonanza: Second-Most in Test History

Wiaan Mulder scored 49 fours and 4 sixes, a total of 53 boundaries, the second-most in a Test innings, just behind England’s John Edrich (57 boundaries in 1965).

A Run-Machine: 531 Runs in the Series

With 531 runs in the current series, Mulder now has the fifth-highest run total in a two-Test bilateral series, behind Jayasuriya, Hammond, Andy Flower, and McCullum.

South Africa’s Second-Fastest 600+ Total Run Rate

South Africa posted 626/5 declared at 5.49 runs per over—their second-fastest run rate in a 600+ Test total, and the second-quickest in Test history for the 600+ scores, behind only England’s 6.5 RPO against Pakistan (2022).
