Wiaan Mulder entered the records of Test cricket history with a record-breaking unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. The South African all-rounder broke several records with his marathon innings, becoming only the second South African player to achieve a triple hundred in Test cricket and joining the elite class of the top five highest individual Test scores of all time.
With his unbeaten 367, Wiaan Mulder is now on the fifth-highest individual score in Test cricket, joining the likes of Brian Lara, Matthew Hayden, and Mahela Jayawardene.
Score | Player | Team | Opponent | Venue, Year |
400* | Brian Lara | West Indies | England | St John’s, 2004 |
380 | Matthew Hayden | Australia | Zimbabwe | Perth (2003) |
375 | Brian Lara | West Indies | England | St John’s, 1994 |
374 | Mahela Jayawardene | Sri Lanka | South Africa | Colombo (2006) |
367* | Wiaan Mulder | South Africa | Zimbabwe | Bulawayo, 2025 |
Mulder’s 367* is not only historic, but it’s also the highest individual score in an away Test match by a batsman, surpassing Hanif Mohammad’s 337 (1958). It is also South Africa’s highest individual Test score, breaking Hashim Amla’s 311* (2012).
Scoring his triple hundred in only 297 balls, Wiaan Mulder achieved the second-quickest triple century in Test cricket by deliveries received. Virender Sehwag (278 deliveries) was the only quicker player, and in third position comes England’s Harry Brook (310 deliveries).
Mulder was the third player in Test cricket history to make 100+ runs in two distinct sessions of the same innings:
131 during the last session on Day 1*
103 before lunch on Day 2*
No one else before Don Bradman (1930) and Matthew Hayden (2003) had made it to this rarefied territory.
Mulder’s 367* was in the first innings of a match after South Africa was made to bat only the third such occasion in Test history. The other two? Graham Gooch (333 in 1990) and Hayden (380 in 2003).
Mulder’s score made him the third South African to have scored 350+ in first-class cricket, following:
Stephen Cook -390 (2009)
Barry Richards – 356 (1970/71)
It was also the third triple-century scored in Zimbabwe in first-class cricket history.
Record Gap Between Top Two Scores in an Innings
The 285-run difference between Mulder (367)* and the next highest scorer David Bedingham (82) is the third-largest margin between the top two scores in a Test innings.
Boundary Bonanza: Second-Most in Test History
Wiaan Mulder scored 49 fours and 4 sixes, a total of 53 boundaries, the second-most in a Test innings, just behind England’s John Edrich (57 boundaries in 1965).
Boundaries | Score | Player | Year |
57 (52+5) | 310* | John Edrich | 1965 |
53 (49+4) | 367* | Wiaan Mulder | 2025 |
49 (38+11) | 380 | Hayden | 2003 |
With 531 runs in the current series, Mulder now has the fifth-highest run total in a two-Test bilateral series, behind Jayasuriya, Hammond, Andy Flower, and McCullum.
South Africa posted 626/5 declared at 5.49 runs per over—their second-fastest run rate in a 600+ Test total, and the second-quickest in Test history for the 600+ scores, behind only England’s 6.5 RPO against Pakistan (2022).
On his debut as Test captain, Wiaan Mulder was the first player to cross 250 runs, adding another special feather to a performance already in record books.
From shattering records that had stood for decades to joining elite statistical clubs, Wiaan Mulder’s unbeaten 367 is one of the all-time great Test cricket knocks*. His panache, pace, and tenacity under pressure have not only pumped up South Africa but also thrilled cricket enthusiasts across the world.
