Former Australia captain Steve Smith surprised everyone by retiring from ODI cricket. However, one person had got the news about it earlier. A video is going viral on social media. It is being claimed that after the match against India, Virat Kohli had asked Steve Smith about retirement while shaking hands.

In the viral video, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli are seen talking. Then Kohli asks something to Steve Smith and Smith answers it. Then Kohli gets emotional and hugs the former Australian captain. After this, it is being claimed on social media that Kohli asked Smith if it was his last ODI match. In response to this, Smith said yes.

Only Smith and Kohli can tell how much truth is there in the viral video. At present, Smith has confirmed his retirement. After the defeat in the first semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, stand-in captain Steve Smith announced his retirement from ODI cricket. In the semi-finals, India defeated Australia by 4 wickets and made it to the finals.

Smith told a wonderful journey

Steve Smith said in a conversation with PTI, “It has been a wonderful journey and I have enjoyed every single minute. There have been a lot of wonderful times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a big highlight. Thanks to the teammates who supported me in this journey.”

Smith further said, now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup, so it seems like the right time for me to retire. I will continue playing Test cricket, I am looking forward to the World Test Championship final and then England at home. I think I still have a lot to contribute in Tests.
