The strategy game (strategic game) is that sort of game, where the presence of mind and decision-making skills of a player are considered to have a high significance in order to determine the results of a game. However, strategy games are often considered as a progeny of war games. According to reports, strategy games rely primarily on strategy, and when it comes to defining the term ‘strategy’, two factors are required to be taken in consideration: the complexity, and game-scale actions.
Origin and Examples
However, the origin of strategic game travels back to the period of ancient civilizations which are found in places like Egypt, India, Greece, Rome, and the Levant. As many of these games were played in the past across various regions, but a few are active and played even now.
- Mancala
One of the most popular among those is “Mancala”. The origin of this game traces back to Samaria around 5000 years back and is said to diversify into scores of varieties since then. As per reports, in this game one form challenges two opposing players in order to clear their side of a board of mancala pieces, while adding them into their opponent’s side and thus preventing the opponent from clearing their side. Moreover, in this game there is a larger pit at each end of the game board where each of the players must try to deposit the pieces for gaining points. And as one side is cleared, the other side of the board’s pieces are added to the cleared side of the pile.
- Chess
The other renowned and widely played strategic game is “Chess”, which is considered to have originated around the sixth century CE in India. Later, the game spread across the west but this game has managed to gain social status and performance in a better way than other games. However, the game portrays foot soldiers, knights, kings, queens, bishops, and rooks, some of which are found in the historical European military. All of the pieces have a unique movement pattern. Moreover, Chess was also accepted by many as an alternative for intelligence, therefore the people who became grand masters were considered as smart individuals.
Another modern game that has become a sensation for its tactics and strategy is the XCOM franchise, specially the two most recent games, XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) and XCOM 2 (2016). However, these two portray the player as a commander of an international organisation known as “XCOM”.
