Rising Powerhouse: Strategy To Redefine Vietnam Football

Football in Vietnam is set for a rehaul. 

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) on June 6 officially launched its strategy for the upliftment of Vietnam football, with the help of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for the 2024–2027 period.

VFF President Tran Quoc Tuan underlined the need for a long-term, comprehensive strategy to sustain the improving momentum and fulfill its commitment to working closely with its partners to turn the strategy into reality.

Strategy To Redefine Vietnam Football

The strategy focuses on making women’s football professional at all levels in Vietnam, from domestic competitions and clubs to the national team. Efforts will be made to improve the quality of their game. The objective is to inspire younger generations, develop female coaches and referees. Attracting sponsorship and brands with expanded media coverage will aid in boosting women’s participation in football. The initiative also focuses on promoting school football for girls.

Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration Le Thi Hoang Yen described the strategy as a critical step towards building a professional and sustainable women’s football ecosystem. She expressed her confidence that continued support from FIFA, UEFA, and AFC would help elevate Vietnam’s women’s football to new heights.

Vietnam women’s football team’s set of goals

The focus of the Vietnam women’s football now shifts to achieve the following: 

  • qualification for the 2026 and 2029 AFC Women’s Asian Cups 
  • 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup
  • participation of three clubs in the 2028 AFC Women’s Champions League, with at least one aiming to reach the semi-finals by 2030

A FIFA representative praised the VFF’s clear vision and strong potential, noting that the strategy would create more opportunities for women and girls in the sport and beyond.

Achievements of Vietnam women’s football team in history

The national football women’s team of Vietnam, which went international in 1997, has claimed three ASEAN titles, eight SEA Games gold medals, reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Games, and made a historic debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023. At the club level, Ho Chi Minh City’s team reached the semi-finals of the AFC Women’s Champions League.
