Sun Yang (born 1 December 1991 in Hangzhou, China) is a legendary Chinese freestyle swimmer, three‑time Olympic gold medallist and 11‑time world champion, widely regarded as China’s most decorated swimmer and the first male to win global titles from 200 m to 1500 m freestyle. 

He set Olympic and world records and won Olympic golds in 400 m, 1500 m, and 200 m events. His biggest award includes Olympic gold medals and multiple World Championship titles. An amazing fact: he’s the first man to win Olympic and World golds at every freestyle distance.

2013 Driving Without A Licence

Sun was detained, fined, and temporarily banned from competition after being caught driving without a valid licence following a collision in Hangzhou.

2014 Doping Suspension

He served a three‑month ban after testing positive for a banned stimulant, which he said was for a medical condition.

2018 Testing Incident

Sun refused a drug test at his home, disputing testers’ credentials, and a container with his blood was destroyed, triggering global backlash.

CAS Ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sport banned him (later reduced) for tampering with the doping control process, sidelining him for years.

Horton podium protest

Australian swimmer Mack Horton refused the podium with him in 2019, calling him a “drug cheat,” spotlighting doping disputes.

Sun Yang debuted internationally in 2007 and won his first World medal in 2009. In 2010, he earned Asian Games golds, and in 2011, he broke the 1500m world record and became a double World Champion. He also claimed numerous World and Asian Games titles, set records, and received the FINA Outstanding Contribution to Swimming award for his influence on the sport in China.
