The SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) had a fantastic IPL 2024 season but struggled during the 2025 auction. Despite their limited budget, the team spent big on a few players, raising questions about their strategy. However, thanks to strong retention, SRH still has a solid team heading into the new season. While some areas need improvement, many positions in their playing XI are already set.
Here’s a look at SRH’s strongest lineup for IPL 2025, including an impact player.
Openers: Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were a deadly opening pair in IPL 2024. Their strong performances helped the team dominate the powerplay and set a solid foundation. While new signing Ishan Kishan could be a top-order option, sticking with the tried-and-tested combination of Head and Sharma seems like the smart move for now.
Middle Order: Ishan Kishan, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kamindu Mendis, Heinrich Klaasen, Abhinav Manohar
Ishan Kishan, batting at No. 3, can capitalize on the powerplay if an early wicket falls. Although he hasn’t been consistent in middle overs, his talent gives hope for improvement.
Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen, key players retained from last season, will form the core of the middle order. Kamindu Mendis and Abhinav Manohar, both added in the 2025 auction, add depth.
Mendis isn’t a complete T20 batter but might play ahead of Adam Zampa to strengthen the batting lineup. Abhinav Manohar, known for his ability to attack spinners, could face challenges as a finisher but may have to adapt due to SRH’s limited options.
Lower Order: Pat Cummins (C), Harshal Patel, Mohammed Shami, Rahul Chahar, Simarjeet Singh
The pace attack, led by captain Pat Cummins, includes the experienced Harshal Patel and Mohammed Shami. Simarjeet Singh might be included as a fourth pacer, providing extra firepower during the middle overs. This strategy worked well for SRH in IPL 2024.
Rahul Chahar, the team’s lead spinner, will be crucial in Hyderabad’s spin-friendly conditions. While Adam Zampa could be effective, using him would weaken the batting, making Mendis a preferred choice in the XI.
Challenges Ahead
SRH has a strong core but lacks flexibility in their squad. Their heavy spending on select players during the auction has left them with limited backup options. While they have the talent to compete, ensuring the right balance between batters and bowlers will be their biggest challenge this season.
With their retained stars and new additions, SRH has the potential to perform well in IPL 2025. However, their success will depend on smart decision-making and maximizing the strengths of their squad.
