Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers: Although there were major weather interruptions, the opening match of the Big Bash League cricket season between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers was filled with high drama.
It was delayed by 80 minutes due to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning before an 11-over match could be played between the two sides at Optus Stadium in Perth. But Cooper Connolly’s scintillating performance took the Scorchers to a five-wicket win with five overs to spare.
Weather Delays Set the Tone at Optus Stadium
Rain accompanied by lightning prompted the need for cover usage in the first situation at Optus Stadium since it opened in 2018, and it is a relief that the ground drains so well, as it allowed for playing to continue with optimum batting conditions once the sun broke through the clouds.
Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers: Azam’s Testing Time in BBL
Everyone had their eyes on Babar Azam, making his long-awaited BBL debut for the Sydney Sixers. Nevertheless, the key player found it difficult to get adjusted to the extra bounce of the ball that came his way with disastrous results in his initial Big Bash experience.
Wearing number 056, Babar could only muster 2 runs from 5 balls before being dismissed by Brody Couch, who got him with a length ball that he sliced straight down mid-on, putting the Sixers in trouble at 2/15 after the first over, courtesy of opener Hughes getting a golden duck.
Sixers Come From Behind for Respectable Score
Despite being reduced to 41 for 4, the Sixers managed an incredible late attack. Josh Philippe, Lachlan Shaw, and Jack Edwards went hammer and tongs, blasting 46 runs from the last 21 deliveries to guide their team to 113/5 a decent total for a limited-over game.
“Scorchers’ Chase: Early Setbacks, Strong
A shaky start for the Perth Scorchers’ response. Their captain, Mitchell Marsh, playing only his second match for the BBL since the last season, got out for a third ball duck, edge to Charlie Stobo to Babar Azam at first slip.
Finn Allen displayed some glimpses of genius with back-to-back sixes but was out for 16, putting the Scorchers slightly behind the required pace.
Cooper Connolly Steals the Show
Then came Cooper Connolly, who totally altered the face of the match. Batting at No. 3, Connolly played an incredible 59-run knock off just 31 balls, including five sixes.
He anchored a key 48-run stand with captain Ashton Turner, who showed the x-factor that makes some compare him to Glenn Maxwell or Travis Head. Connolly’s impressive innings came just two days before an IPL auction, which further lifted his rising stature in international cricket.
Despite Connolly being dismissed with nine runs left to win, it was too little too late. The Scorchers satisfactorily hunted down the total with five balls left.
