Szczesny On Ter Stegen Return

Since making his FC Barcelona debut in January of this year, Wojciech Szczesny, the team’s current first-choice goalkeeper, has gone 20 games without a loss.

Since Marc-Andre ter Stegen is nearing the end of his recuperation from a knee injury, the 34-year-old has taken Inaki Pena’s place as the starting player.

The impact on the goalkeeping department once Ter Stegen, who is back in training, has the medical clearance to resume playing has therefore been discussed.

Szczesny, who signed for Barcelona last October while retired and living in Marbella, stepped in following Ter Stegen’s setback.

“I say this with complete peace of mind: I came here to replace Marc, and I would have no problem at all if Marc simply returned and took his place back,” Szczesny said.

He added that the final decision rests with Flick and reiterated his commitment to the team’s success over personal ambition.

“I want to help the team and give my best on the pitch, but if the coach decides at any point that the captain should return and take over the goal, for me that is a completely normal and understandable situation,” he noted.

As previously reported, Szczesny would need to be deregistered in order for Ter Stegen to compete in the UEFA Champions League, even though he may return and play in La Liga and the Copa del Rey without any problems.

Once their captain is back in action, it will be interesting to see if Barca chooses to follow that path.
