India romped home to a record-breaking third title win in the history of the T20 World Cup after defeating New Zealand in the final of the 2026 edition held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The Performance
India were right on the money from the first ball of the game as the opening pair of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma added 98 runs for the first wicket in double quick time to get the opposition bowlers under pressure with both batters scoring a quick-fire half-century to lay a platform for the incoming batters to capatalize on.
The Assualt
The blistering display of batting in the first six overs wascarried forward by Ishan Kishan, who came in to bat at number three after the fall of Abhishek Sharma’s wicket and notched up the third half-century of the match.
The Partnership
Sanju and Ishan added 105 runs for the second wicket and got the team over the 200-run mark as the Men in Blue looked set to post 270-280 runs. But as is the case with New Zealand, the Blackcaps made a strong comeback with James Neesham picking up three wickets in an over to stem the flow of runs in the next few overs.
The Finish
However, the eventual champions were given a strong finish to their batting innings by scoring 26 runs off just 8, which led to India posting an above-par total of 255 runs on the board.
The Bowling
India were never really challenged in the chase as New Zealand kept on losing wickets and were bowled out for 159 runs with Jasprit Bumrah picking four wickets and was well supported by Axar Patel, who clinched three wickets, thereby giving India a memorable win by 96 runs.

The Reward
The Suryakumar Yadav-led side is receiving praise from across the globe for their performance throughout the World Cup and has now been rewarded by the BCCI, which announced a cash prize of INR 131 Crore earlier today.
The Record
Along with defending the T20 World Cup title, India also broke several records by becoming the first team to win the trophy three times, the most by any team in the history of the tournament. Other than that, the Men in Blue became the first team to win the trophy of the T20 World Cup on home soil, as no team had succeeded in doing so in the previous nine editions.
The Captain
As far as the captain of the team, Suryakumar Yadav, is concerned, although he was dismissed without scoring in the final, the right-hander played a few crucial knocks, including the half-century he scored when India found itself in trouble in the opening match against USA and was on point while leading.
